The Underground Railroad Film Series welcomes filmmaker Marco Williams (The Two Towns of Jasper) for Seattle premiere of his acclaimed work, Banished: American Ethnic Cleansings. Between the Civil War and the Great Depression, dozens of Southern Counties banished thriving African-American communities. This little-known phenomenon typically began with a criminal accusation of a black man and his lynching, followed by the violent eviction of all the black families living in the county — and the appropriation of their land. Today, these counties remain virtually all white and their victims’ descendants remain uncompensated. African-American filmmaker Marco Williams interviews both groups, traveling to Forsyth County (Georgia), Pierce City (Missouri) and Harrison (Arkansas). He takes an incendiary subject and through force of personality weaves a thoughtful investigation of racism, responsibility and real estate.

Williams will be on hand to discuss the film on Friday, November 2, at a free 1pm matinee screening at the Seattle Art Museum and the 7pm community screening at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center. Williams will also present film excerpts and discussion at the Seattle Race Conference on Saturday, November 3rd at the Seattle Center.

The film is presented with support from the Seattle Office of Civil Rights. Additional support provided by the Seattle Art Museum. For Friday matinee and Race Conference info - www.seattleraceconference.org
