Seattle International Women’s Day march focuses on poverty, militarization, and violence against women and children

This year, activists working for women’s rights in Seattle will join an international movement as they celebrate International Women’s Day 2010 as part of the World March of Women. In solidarity with women around the world, a broad coaltion of local progressive women’s groups has planned a march and rally on Saturday, March 6.

Organizers invite all who are concerned with protecting human rights and promoting peace and justice to gather at noon at Powell Barnett Park (Martin Luther King Jr Way and E Alder St) and proceed down Jackson St. to a rally in Pioneer Square’s Occidental Park. On the way, they will stop at a number of sites that highlight Seattle’s direct connection to the issues at the heart of the World March of Women’s international protests—ending poverty, stopping violence against women and children, and opposing war and the continued militarization of society.

The rally at 2 pm at Occidental Park will feature thought-provoking entertainment and dynamic local social activists speaking on issues such as reproductive justice, immigrant rights, and the ways women can work together locally, nationally, and internationally.
