August 16, 6:00pm, Lincoln Park in Seattle, Shelter #3

A potluck picnic, to be held Monday, August 16 at Lincoln Park in Seattle, is an opportunity for labor and community activists to learn more about exciting campaigns to strengthen workers' rights in the Seattle area.

An activist with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 21 will discuss the drive to win a "bill of rights" for 21,000 grocery workers in Puget Sound. UFCW members employed at QFC, Safeway, Fred Meyer, Metropolitan Market and independent stores are working under an "extended" contract until they can win guarantees of fair pay, sick leave, safe working conditions and other basics. The outcome for grocery workers is bound to set a pace for other unions who are also negotiating contracts through fall and winter.

Also featured will be firsthand reports by delegates just returning from the Washington State Labor Council's Convention, held in Tacoma this year. Top issues at the convention include labor's policy on immigration reform and whether or not to support Democratic Party candidates who cut jobs and slashed benefits for state workers in the last legislative session.

The potluck, hosted by the Freedom Socialist Party, is designed to bolster awareness and assistance for the growing number of labor fightbacks. Everyone is welcome.
