One Woman's Voice: A Peruvian Activist Fights Dirty Industry, Community Degradation, and Imprisonment.
Maria Elena Foronda Farro is co-founder of the NGO Natura in Chimbote, Peru, whose tireless activism has sparked changes in Peru’s fishmeal industry, which dumps untreated industrial waste into streams and out of smokestacks, causing cholera outbreaks, fungal skin diseases, and the worst pollution problems in Peru's coastal cities. Imprisoned for one year on false charges, her efforts in grassroots organizing challenge the economic paradigm and the growing presence of corporate globalization. Foronda Farro is a recipient of the 2003 Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest award for grassroots environmentalism.  more...

"Jolom Mayaetik" was formed in 1996 when 250 indigenous women organized themselves to gain a better price for their woven work. The democratically run co-op is a living example of "fair-trade-in-practice." It provides education and training opportunities for young indigenous women, giving them the tools they need to confront profound social and economic injustices.  more...

Mayan Women Weaving Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico
A representative from the Jolom Mayaetik (Tzotzil: "Mayan Women Weavers") Cooperative based in Chiapas, Mexico will make her first visit to Seattle April 6-10, 2004. Co-op co-founder Celia Santiz Ruiz will speak about how indigenous women have responded to the economic reforms and crushing poverty that hit the Mexican countryside in the wake of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
