Chalmers Johnson, a highly regarded scholar whose field, as longtime president of the Japan Policy Research Institute and professor (now emeritus) at the University of California, San Diego, focused on Japan and Asia. He came to greater prominence - in fact, became a central player in national debate -- when his 2000 book, Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire (Owl, newly amended), became discussed as a way of looking at root causes of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington.
